Book Review:
This Macmillan Guided Reader (Upper Level) presents Charles Dickens’ Great Expectations in simplified English for intermediate learners. The story follows the orphan Pip from a terrifying childhood encounter with an escaped convict to his unexpected rise as a “gentleman” in London. The language has been carefully controlled for vocabulary and grammar, making it accessible to students of English as a second language. While some of Dickens’ original richness is lost in simplification, the core plot and key characters (Miss Havisham, Estella, Magwitch) remain compelling. An excellent choice for classroom use or self-study. Includes pre-reading and post-reading activities (not shown in sample).
