Review:
Mr. Sampath tells the story of two dedicated Malgudi inhabitants: Srinivas, who edits a newspaper called The Banner, and Mr. Sampath, who prints it. When the newspaper suddenly folds, Mr. Sampath becomes involved with a film studio, Sunrise Productions, and ropes Srinivas into writing scripts. Unfortunately, the glamorous life goes to Mr. Sampath's head and chaos ensues. Graham Greene wrote: ''Narayan... wakes in me a spring of gratitude, for he has offered me a second home. Without him I could never have known what it is like to be Indian.'' An amusing, perspicacious story of great distinction and charm. This Centenary Edition commemorates Narayan's 100th birth anniversary.
