''Little Dorrit'' is Dickens at his most ambitious and his most angry. It's a massive, sprawling novel that takes aim at almost every institution of Victorian England—the government, the prisons, the financial system, the class structure—and exposes them all as corrupt and dehumanizing. At the heart of this dark world is Amy Dorrit, the ''little'' heroine, a beacon of selfless love and quiet strength. She is one of Dickens' most beautiful creations. The novel weaves together her story of poverty and devotion with Arthur Clennam's search for truth and the satirical nightmare of the Circumlocution Office, where nothing ever gets done. It's long, and it's dense, but it's also incredibly rewarding. The characters are unforgettable, from the villainous Rigaud to the wonderfully comic Flora Finching. And the final revelation is truly shocking. George Bernard Shaw called it ''a masterpiece among masterpieces,'' and he was right. A must-read for any serious lover of classic literature.
