Book Review:
Charles Dickens called David Copperfield (1849-50) his “favorite child” — “Of all my books I like this the best.” This semi-autobiographical novel follows David from his miserable childhood (forced to work in a factory after his mother’s death) to his eventual success as a novelist. Along the way, he encounters some of Dickens’ most beloved characters: the eternally optimistic Mr. Micawber, the villainous Uriah Heep (“’Umble”), the kind Peggotty family, and the eccentric Betsy Trotwood. The novel is a rich tapestry of joy and sorrow, comedy and tragedy. Thackeray famously exclaimed, “Bravo Dickens!” This Wordsworth Classics edition includes the original Phiz illustrations and an introduction by Adrienne Gavin. Essential reading for any Dickens lover.
