Henning Mankell's ''Kennedy's Brain'' is a departure from his famous Wallander series, but it showcases his signature blend of suspense and social conscience. The story begins with archaeologist Louise Cantor discovering her son Henrik dead in his apartment. The police rule it a suicide, but Louise, with a mother's intuition, refuses to accept that. Her investigation leads her to a photograph of an unknown woman in Mozambique, and she travels there, hoping to find answers.

What unfolds is a complex and unsettling thriller that spans continents. In Mozambique, Louise encounters a world of fear and desperation, particularly among the patients at AIDS clinics run by an American businessman. She slowly realizes that Henrik's death is connected to something far bigger—a global conspiracy involving pharmaceutical companies, political corruption, and the exploitation of Africa's most vulnerable people.

Mankell's prose is straightforward and powerful. He doesn't shy away from criticizing the greed and indifference of the West toward Africa's suffering. The novel is as much a political polemic as it is a mystery, and some readers may find the social commentary heavy-handed.
