Howard Jacobson's ''The Finkler Question'' is a dazzling, difficult, and deeply rewarding novel. It is a book that will make you laugh out loud on one page and wince with recognition on the next. It is a masterpiece of wit, insight, and unflinching honesty, and it fully deserved its Man Booker Prize. The novel centers on three men, all of them grappling with loss and the meaning of their lives. Julian Treslove is a gentle, romantic soul, a man who has spent his life feeling like an outsider. Sam Finkler is a successful Jewish intellectual, a man of confidence and certainty, at least on the surface. Libor Sevcik is their former teacher, a Czech émigré, now an old man haunted by the death of his beloved wife. Their friendship is the anchor of the novel, a bond that has survived decades of change and disappointment. The catalyst for the story is a random act of violence. After a dinner party, Treslove is mugged, and he becomes convinced that the attack was an anti-Semitic hate crime. This mistaken belief sends him on a strange and obsessive quest to understand Jewish identity, a quest he calls becoming a ''Finkler'' (after his friend). His journey is both comic and tragic, as he tries on different identities and grapples with questions of belonging and exclusion. Jacobson's prose is extraordinary—witty, sharp, and deeply intelligent. He has a genius for capturing the absurdities of human behavior and the complexities of the human heart. ''The Finkler Question'' is a novel about grief, about friendship, about the nature of identity, and about the impossible search for meaning in a chaotic world. It is a book that will challenge you, move you, and stay with you long after you finish it. A truly great novel.
