Review:
The Dark Room is R.K. Narayan's poignant early novel about Savitri, a woman who realizes how completely dependent she is on her husband Ramani. When Ramani hires the fiercely independent Shanta Bai, Savitri retreats into the only private space she has – the dark room. After further betrayal, she leaves her home and attempts suicide. Rescued, she struggles for self-sufficiency but eventually realizes she must return, though a part of her has died. Praised by the New Yorker and compared to Gogol, this is a fulfilling, touching, and sympathetic exploration of marriage, dependence, and female identity in 1930s India.
