Book Review:
''A Midsummer Night's Dream'' is pure magic. It's Shakespeare's most enchanting and playful comedy, a world where fairies meddle in human affairs, lovers wander through a forest confused and bewitched, and a group of terrible amateur actors rehearse a play that is hilariously bad. It's a play about the madness of love, and it's full of some of the most beautiful poetry Shakespeare ever wrote. The language is so rich and evocative that you can almost feel the moonlight and smell the flowers. The characters are unforgettable: the mischievous Puck, the feuding fairy royalty, the lovestruck Helena, and the ridiculous Bottom, who gets turned into a donkey and is adored by a fairy queen. It's a joyous, funny, and deeply romantic play. This Cambridge edition is excellent, with notes that help you appreciate the language and the stage history. A perfect introduction to Shakespeare's comedies. Highly recommended.
