Book Review:
Every boy wants to be his mother's favorite, and Dennis is no exception. In ''Mama's Pet,'' Hank Ketcham's beloved menace tries his best to earn his mother's approval—with predictably chaotic results.
Dennis genuinely loves his mom, Alice. He wants to help her, please her, and make her proud. Unfortunately, his five-year-old logic leads him to the most disastrous conclusions about how to achieve these goals. Want to help with the dishes? Why not use the garden hose in the kitchen! Trying to prepare a surprise breakfast? Time to use every pot, pan, and ingredient in the house! Attempting to clean up your room? Better reorganize everything—including things that weren't yours to begin with!
Alice Mitchell is the long-suffering heroine of these strips. She loves her son desperately, but his ''help'' tests her patience daily. Her expressions of weary resignation, dawning horror, and occasional moments of genuine tenderness are captured perfectly by Ketcham's art. Despite everything, her love for Dennis shines through.
What makes this collection so special is its heart. Yes, Dennis causes chaos wherever he goes, but his motives are always pure. He genuinely wants to be good, to help, to make his mother happy. That his efforts backfire is part of the humor, but the underlying love is always there.
Henry, Dennis's father, also appears, usually caught in the crossfire between his wife's frustration and his son's enthusiasm. Mr. Wilson, the neighbor, makes cameo appearances, often falling victim to Dennis's well-intentioned efforts to be helpful.
Ketcham's artwork is simple but brilliantly expressive. A single panel can convey Alice's complex emotions—love, frustration, exhaustion, and amusement—all at once.
This collection is part of a series that includes other Dennis adventures like ''The Little Bully,'' ''Taking The Lead,'' ''Upside Down,'' and many more.
''Dennis the Menace: Mama's Pet'' is perfect for readers aged 7 and up, as well as adults who appreciate classic comic humor. It's a warm, funny tribute to the special bond between mothers and sons—even when that bond is tested daily. Highly recommended.
