Book Review:
''George's Marvellous Medicine'' is classic Roald Dahl—witty, wild, and wonderfully irreverent. The story introduces us to George, a young boy saddled with a truly terrible grandmother. She's not just grumpy; she's mean, demanding, and takes great pleasure in bossing George around. Most grandmas are kind and helpful, but not George's grandma.
When George is tasked with giving Grandma her daily medicine, he decides enough is enough. He'll make her a new medicine, one that will teach her a lesson. What follows is a hilarious and chaotic adventure as George raids the house for ingredients: toothpaste, shaving cream, washing powder, flea powder for dogs, shoe polish, and more. He boils it all up into a frothing, bubbling concoction and feeds it to his unsuspecting grandmother.
The results are immediate and spectacular. Grandma begins to grow—and grow and grow—until she crashes through the roof! The magic medicine also has extraordinary effects on the farm animals, leading to giant chickens and other delightful absurdities. But when George's father tries to recreate the medicine, things don't go quite as planned, leading to even more chaos.
Dahl's prose is as engaging as ever, filled with his signature dark humor and love for clever, resourceful children. Quentin Blake's scratchy, expressive illustrations perfectly capture the mayhem. The book is a celebration of childhood creativity and a wonderfully satisfying tale of a small boy outsmarting a tyrannical adult. It's a quick, fun read that will have young readers giggling from start to finish. A marvellous book indeed! Highly recommended for ages 7-10.
