Book Review:
Shelby Mahurin's ''Serpent & Dove'' is a dazzling, addictive, and utterly enchanting debut that lives up to every word of its glowing praise. It is a book that has everything you could want in a fantasy romance: a fierce and funny heroine, a brooding and honorable hero, a richly imagined world, and a love story that will set your heart on fire. The novel is set in an alternate version of historical France, a world where witches are real and are hunted mercilessly by the all-powerful Church. Louise le Blanc is a witch on the run, hiding in plain sight in the city of Belle Terre. She is a thief, a survivor, and a woman who trusts no one. Reid Diggory is a witch hunter, a man of unwavering faith and principle, who has dedicated his life to ridding the world of the evil he believes witches represent. When a series of events forces them into a marriage of convenience, these two sworn enemies find themselves living under the same roof. The dynamic between Lou and Reid is the heart of the novel. Lou is witty, irreverent, and fiercely independent. Reid is rigid, honorable, and utterly bewildered by his new wife. Their banter is sharp and hilarious, and the slow-burn romance between them is absolutely captivating. You will be rooting for them from the very first page. Mahurin's world-building is rich and immersive, and the magic system is both fascinating and deadly. The plot is fast-paced and full of twists and turns, building to a climax that will leave you breathless and desperate for the next book. ''Serpent & Dove'' is a triumph. It's a book that will make you laugh, make you swoon, and keep you up all night reading. If you are a fan of Sarah J. Maas, Leigh Bardugo, or Sabaa Tahir, you need to read this book. Highly, highly recommended.
