Book Review:
Mark Twain’s The Prince and the Pauper (1881) is a charming historical comedy. Two boys — Edward Tudor, Prince of Wales (the future King Edward VI), and Tom Canty, a ragged London beggar — look exactly alike. For a prank, they swap clothes. But when no one believes the boy in rags is the real prince, a hilarious and dangerous confusion follows. The real prince suffers the brutal life of a pauper, while the pauper struggles to rule a kingdom. Twain uses this mix-up to critique social injustice and celebrate empathy and kindness. A wonderful read for children and adults alike. This Riverdale Classics edition is complete and unabridged.
