The Painter of Signs tells the story of Raman, a young bachelor who paints signboards in Malgudi. When the beautiful and ruthlessly dedicated Daisy commissions him to paint signs for her population clinic advocating two-child families, they travel together through neighboring villages. Raman is appalled by her hard-edged zeal yet enthralled by her beauty and mysterious independence. A sardonic, bittersweet tale of love, tradition versus modernity, and India at its best and worst.
