Book Review:
Vikram Seth's ''A Suitable Boy'' is not just a novel; it is a universe. It is a book of immense scope and breathtaking detail, a world so richly imagined and lovingly rendered that you will find yourself completely and utterly lost in its pages for weeks. And you will be grateful for every single moment. At its simplest, it is the story of Lata Mehra, a nineteen-year-old girl, and her mother's quest to find her a suitable husband. But from this simple premise, Seth spins an epic tapestry that encompasses the lives of four families, the politics of a newly independent India, and the struggles of a nation finding its feet. The novel is set in the early 1950s, and Seth brings this world to life with astonishing vividness. We move from the bustling streets of the fictional city of Brahmpur to the rural villages, from the world of university professors to the realm of politics and landownership. The characters are the heart and soul of this book. There are so many of them, and yet each one is rendered with such depth and humanity that they become unforgettable. There is Lata herself, caught between duty and desire; her spirited and determined mother, Mrs. Rupa Mehra; her intellectual brother, Arun; the poet and landowner Maan; the dignified courtesan Saeeda Bai; and a host of others who populate this world with their joys, sorrows, and complex relationships. ''A Suitable Boy'' is a novel about love in all its forms: romantic love, familial love, the love of land, the love of country. It is also a novel about history, about the painful and necessary process of change. It is funny, sad, wise, and deeply moving. It is a masterpiece, a book that will enrich your life and stay with you forever. As Jonathan Yardley of The Washington Post wrote, ''Surrender to this strange, beguiling world and be swept away on the wings of story.'' I cannot recommend it highly enough.
