Book Review:
Arthur Miller’s A View from the Bridge (1955) is a devastating modern tragedy set in an Italian-American community in Brooklyn. Eddie Carbone, a longshoreman, and his wife take in two illegal immigrants from Italy, relatives of his wife. When Eddie’s niece Catherine falls in love with one of them, Eddie’s hidden jealousy and unhealthy possessiveness explode into violence. Miller explores themes of honor, betrayal, forbidden desire, and self-destruction. The play has often been compared to Greek tragedy — Nicholas Hytner (Royal National Theatre) says it “will always stand with the masterpieces of Ibsen, Shakespeare and Sophocles.” This Penguin edition includes an introduction by Arthur Miller himself and a foreword by the late actor Philip Seymour Hoffman. Essential reading for drama lovers.
