Oliver Bowden's ''Renaissance'' is the novelization of the massively popular video game ''Assassin's Creed II,'' and it serves as an excellent entry point into the rich world of the Assassin's Creed universe. For fans of the game, it offers deeper insight into the characters and events they love. For newcomers, it's a gripping historical adventure that stands on its own.

The novel introduces us to Ezio Auditore da Firenze, a young Italian nobleman living in 15th-century Florence. Ezio is charming, reckless, and carefree—until his world is shattered. His father and brothers are betrayed and executed by the ruling families of Italy, victims of a conspiracy that runs deeper than Ezio could ever imagine. He captures the excitement of the game's parkour sequences—Ezio leaping across rooftops, scaling towers, blending into crowds—while adding depth to the characters. Ezio is more than just an action hero; he's a young man driven by grief and rage, learning to channel those emotions into a larger purpose.

The historical setting is vividly rendered. Bowden brings Renaissance Italy to life: the politics, the art, the architecture, the social hierarchies. Florence, Venice, and the other Italian cities become characters in their own right, beautifully evoked through Ezio's eyes.
