Book Review:
''Buddhists in Maharashtra'' by Dr. Talawe Sangharatana Thera is an illuminating and deeply insightful work that explores the revival of Buddhism in modern India. This book is particularly significant as it is written by a Sri Lankan Buddhist missionary who spent years working among the people of Maharashtra.
Ven. Dr. Sangharatana vividly describes how the struggle for Indian independence inspired a resurgence of Buddhism, particularly among the marginalized communities of Maharashtra. The book sheds light on the national and social roles played by Maharashtrians in winning independence for India, while also addressing the appalling conditions of the so-called ''lower stratum'' of Indian society at the time.
As Ven. Dr. P. Gnanarama, Principal of the Buddhist and Pali College of Singapore, writes in the foreword: ''He focuses his attention to show us how Buddhism became a panacea to the masses of Maharashtra who suffered under the stress of traditional Hindu beliefs and practices.''
This is an essential read for anyone interested in the history of Buddhism in India, the social reform movements of the 20th century, or the life and work of Dr. B.R. Ambedkar and the Dalit Buddhist movement. A deeply valuable and inspiring book.
