Said K. Aburish's ''Nasser: The Last Arab'' is a compelling and insightful biography of a man who still casts a long shadow over the Middle East. Aburish, a Palestinian journalist with deep knowledge of the region, writes with both passion and critical detachment, creating a portrait that is neither hagiography nor hatchet job.
The book traces Nasser's rise from a young army officer to the undisputed leader of the Arab world. Aburish captures the excitement of the 1952 revolution, the drama of the Suez Canal nationalization, and the crushing defeat of the 1967 Six-Day War.
