Book Review:
Michael Connelly is a master of the crime novel, and while he's rightly famous for his Harry Bosch series, his standalone thrillers are just as compelling. ''Chasing the Dime'' is a perfect example: a lean, mean, paranoia-fueled page-turner that grabs you from the first chapter and never lets go. It's a story about how a simple mistake—or is it fate?—can shatter an orderly life and plunge you into a nightmare.
The premise is brilliantly simple and instantly relatable. Henry Pierce, a tech entrepreneur on the verge of a major breakthrough, moves into a new apartment. The first time he checks his voicemail, he finds messages for the previous owner, a woman named Lilly. The messages are increasingly frantic, suggesting she is in deep trouble. Pierce makes the fateful decision to investigate, and soon finds himself entangled in a world of high-class escorts, dangerous clients, and a web of lies and secrets.
Connelly is a master of pacing. The plot moves at a breakneck speed, with twists and turns that will keep you guessing until the very end. Henry Pierce is a compelling protagonist: brilliant in his professional life but increasingly out of his depth in the shadowy world he's stumbled into. You feel his obsession and his desperation as his own life begins to unravel. The Los Angeles setting is, as always, vividly rendered.
The Literary Review called it ''immaculately and inventively plotted,'' and the Irish Independent praised its ''thrill-a-minute stuff.'' That's spot on. ''Chasing the Dime'' is 100% Connelly and 100% addictive. If you're looking for a smart, fast, and suspenseful read to devour in a weekend, this is it. Highly recommended for thriller fans.
