How do you review a book that is often called the greatest novel ever written? ''Don Quixote'' is a monumental achievement, a book that is by turns hilarious, heartbreaking, and profoundly wise. It's the story of a man who sees the world not as it is, but as he wishes it to be, and his loyal, down-to-earth squire who loves him even as he shakes his head at his madness. The duo are one of the greatest pairs in all of fiction. The book is famously funny—the windmill scene is just the beginning—but it's also surprisingly modern in its structure and its deep sympathy for its deluded hero. Over 400 years later, Don Quixote's quest to live by a higher code in a mundane world still resonates. This Penguin Classics edition, translated by John Rutherford, is superb. It captures the humor and energy of the original and makes this massive book feel fresh and accessible. A true masterpiece that everyone should read at least once in their life.
