Book Review:
''Hard Luck'' is another brilliantly funny and relatable installment in the Diary of a Wimpy Kid series. This time, Greg Heffley is having a run of truly terrible luck. His best friend Rowley has found a girlfriend and seems to have ditched him entirely. Greg is left to navigate the treacherous waters of middle school social life all on his own, and it's not going well.
Jeff Kinney perfectly captures the feeling of being left behind when a best friend moves on. Greg's attempts to find new friends are cringe-worthy and hilarious, from joining the Safety Patrol to trying to hang out with a group of kids who play a confusing fantasy card game. Desperate to change his fortunes, Greg decides to let a Magic 8 Ball and a set of dice make all his decisions for him. The results, as you might imagine, are disastrous and funny.
The humor is sharp and the situations are incredibly relatable for anyone who has ever felt like the universe is against them. Kinney's cartoon-style illustrations are as expressive as ever, perfectly capturing Greg's despair and his increasingly absurd attempts to find a new path. The story also has a heartwarming ending, reminding us that true friendship can survive even the hardest times.
This is a fantastic addition to the series, full of laughs and moments of genuine emotion. It's a must-read for Wimpy Kid fans and anyone who has ever had a friend move on. Highly recommended for ages 8-12.
