The premise is classic Jonasson: a down-on-his-luck contract killer, Hitman Anders, fresh out of prison, teams up with an atheist former vicar and a hotel receptionist with a ruined family fortune. Their business plan? Have Hitman Anders beat people up for money, with the vicar acting as the ''front office'' and the receptionist handling the books. It's a brilliant, if morally dubious, scheme that works like a charm—until Hitman Anders, in a moment of existential crisis, finds religion. Suddenly, the man who was once willing to kill for cash is now preaching the gospel, and his new partners are left scrambling to save their business and their own skins. What follows is a series of increasingly absurd and hilarious events, as the trio tries to navigate the worlds of organized crime and organized religion, often with disastrous and side-splitting results. Jonasson's prose is witty and engaging, and his characters are wonderfully drawn. Hitman Anders is a lovable brute, the vicar is a cynical and pragmatic schemer, and the receptionist is a hapless innocent caught up in events far beyond his control. Their interactions are pure comedy gold. ''Hitman Anders and the Meaning of It All'' is a perfect escape, a book that will make you forget your troubles and simply enjoy the ride.
