Book Review:
In Islam Beyond the Violent Jihadis, Ziauddin Sardar delivers a much-needed and urgent corrective to the simplistic and often prejudiced narratives surrounding Islam today. As part of the 'Provocations' series, this book is intentionally short, sharp, and designed to spark debate, and it succeeds brilliantly.
Sardar, a prolific and respected Muslim intellectual, writes with both passion and clarity. He dismantles the idea that ISIS or Al-Qaeda represent the true face of Islam, arguing instead that they are a product of specific political, social, and historical circumstances that have been exploited by a nihilistic fringe. He places the blame for the rise of extremism squarely on two fronts: the literalist and intolerant interpretations of Islam promoted by certain factions (often backed by petrodollars from regimes like Saudi Arabia), and the cynical, self-serving foreign policies of Western nations that have destabilized entire regions.
The book is not merely a critique, however. Sardar points to the rich tradition of rationalism, debate, and pluralism within Islamic history and highlights the voices of contemporary Muslims who are fighting for a more enlightened and compassionate practice of their faith. While some readers may find his political analysis contentious, his central thesis is undeniable: to equate Islam with terrorism is a gross distortion that serves only the interests of the extremists on both sides. This is an essential, thought-provoking read for anyone who wants to move beyond the headlines and understand the complex realities of the Muslim world.
