Book Review:
This two-for-one volume is a perfect introduction to the wit and genius of Henry Fielding. Shamela is a short, sharp, and hilarious takedown of Samuel Richardson's sentimental novel Pamela. Fielding saw the hypocrisy in that book's virtuous heroine and created Shamela, a cynical young woman who uses fake modesty to snare a rich husband. It's biting, funny, and surprisingly modern. Joseph Andrews starts as a sort-of sequel, following Pamela's brother, Joseph, who is also a model of virtue. But it quickly becomes its own wonderful thing—a picaresque road novel filled with adventure, romance, and some of the most memorable characters in 18th-century literature. The real star is Parson Adams, a kind-hearted, learned, but utterly clueless clergyman who is constantly getting into trouble. The book is funny, warm, and full of sharp observations about human nature and social class. A must-read for anyone who loves the history of the novel or just a good, funny story.
