Book Review:
Eva Ibbotson's ''Journey to the River Sea'' is quite simply a masterpiece of children's literature—a book that feels like a warm hug and an exhilarating adventure all at once. Having been shortlisted for the Carnegie Medal and runner-up for the Whitbread Award, its reputation is well-deserved.
The story follows Maia, a lonely orphan living in a dreary London boarding school. When she discovers she has relatives in Brazil and is to travel thousands of miles up the Amazon to live with them, she is thrilled—even as her classmates warn her of giant mosquitoes and deadly fevers. But what awaits Maia is far more magical and complex than anyone could imagine.
Ibbotson's writing is pure enchantment. She paints the Amazon rainforest with such vivid detail that you can almost feel the humidity, hear the howler monkeys, and see the endless green. But the true heart of the story lies in its characters: the eccentric and warm Carters, the sinister and greedy relatives Maia must live with, and the unforgettable friendship Maia forms with a boy named Finn, who lives hidden among the Indians.
This is a story about finding home in the most unexpected places, about the courage to stand up against cruelty, and about the beauty of the natural world. It's funny, wise, and deeply moving. Philip Pullman calls it ''funny, wise and true,'' and Anne Fine names it one of her top ten all-time favourite books. I couldn't agree more.
''Journey to the River Sea'' is not just a book for children; it's a book for anyone who believes in adventure, justice, and the magic of true friendship. An absolute must-read that will stay with you forever.
