Book Review:
Michael Grant's ''Lies,'' the third book in the Gone series, raises the stakes even higher for the teens trapped in the FAYZ (Fallout Alley Youth Zone). Tensions are growing, food is scarce, and mutants are under attack. Sam has gone AWOL, leaving a power vacuum. A ghostly figure roams the streets at night, haunting the dreams of those he tormented. Then the town is deliberately set on fire, and Sam sees the figure he dreads most—Drake, who is supposed to be dead.
Grant's series is a relentless exploration of what happens when society collapses and children are left to fend for themselves. ''Lies'' is perhaps the darkest installment yet, delving into themes of power, fear, and the nature of good and evil. The action is non-stop, and the body count rises. The characters are complex and morally ambiguous. This is not a gentle young adult series; it's a brutal, thought-provoking, and utterly compelling read that will appeal to readers of all ages. Stephen King is a fan, and for good reason.
