READER BEWARE... YOU CHOOSE THE SCARE!
R.L. Stine's ''Lost in Stinkeye Swamp'' is another fantastic, spine-tingling entry in the ''Give Yourself Goosebumps'' series, where YOU are the star of the story and YOUR choices determine how terrifying the adventure gets! This time, you're moving into a new home that's more nightmare than dream house.
Welcome to Swamp House. It's ugly, it's run-down, and it's haunted by a ghost named Annabelle. That's the bad news. The good news? There's a legendary treasure hidden somewhere on the property. The better news? You have a chance to find it. In the creepy basement, you'll discover a magic telescope and Annabelle's two-hundred-year-old diary. But to claim the treasure, you'll have to survive a trek through the infamous Stinkeye Swamp, a place teeming with deadly alligators and giant, meat-eating pod plants. Every choice you make—from reading the diary to using the telescope—will lead you down a different, terrifying path. Will you strike it rich, or will you become another lost soul in the swamp? With over 20 different endings, the choice is yours!
This book is a blast from start to finish. The ''choose your own adventure'' format is executed perfectly, encouraging re-reading to find all the spooky and often hilarious endings. The swamp setting is wonderfully creepy, and the ghost of Annabelle adds a layer of supernatural suspense. Stine's writing is, as always, perfectly pitched for middle-grade readers: funny, fast-paced, and just the right amount of scary. The short chapters and interactive nature make it a perfect choice for reluctant readers.
The Verdict: If you're a fan of Goosebumps or love interactive adventures with a haunted house/swamp horror twist, ''Lost in Stinkeye Swamp'' is a must-read. It's a fun, spooky, and highly engaging book that puts you in control of the scares. Highly recommended for readers aged 8-12. Just remember... reader beware, you choose the scare!
