Macbeth is one of Shakespeare’s shortest and bloodiest tragedies. When three witches prophesy that he will become King of Scotland, the ambitious Macbeth — urged on by his ruthless wife, Lady Macbeth — murders King Duncan and seizes the throne. But guilt and paranoia quickly consume him. He sees a ghostly dagger, hears voices (“Sleep no more!”), and commits more murders to secure his power. Lady Macbeth, unable to wash the imaginary blood from her hands, descends into madness (“Out, damned spot!”). The play explores ambition, evil, masculinity, and the terrible cost of unchecked desire.
