''Matilda'' is quite simply one of the greatest children's books ever written. Roald Dahl crafted a story that is both heartwarming and thrilling, featuring one of literature's most beloved heroines. Matilda Wormwood is a small girl with astonishing intelligence, a love of books, and parents who are utterly dreadful. Her father is a crooked car dealer, her mother is obsessed with TV, and they both treat Matilda as a ''nasty little worm.''

Things don't improve at school, which is run by the monstrous Miss Trunchbull, a former hammer-throwing champion who thinks children are ''nauseating'' and throws them out of windows. But Matilda has two things going for her: her kind and perceptive teacher, Miss Honey, and a secret, extraordinary power. With her wit, her courage, and eventually her telekinetic abilities, Matilda sets out to turn the tables on the bullies in her life.

Dahl's prose is sharp, funny, and full of wonderful wordplay. The characters are unforgettable: the vile Trunchbull, the timid but sweet Miss Honey, and the brilliantly clever Matilda. This is a story that champions reading, intelligence, and standing up to injustice. It's immensely satisfying to watch the wicked get their comeuppance. Quentin Blake's scratchy, expressive illustrations are the perfect match, capturing the characters' personalities perfectly.
