''Measure for Measure'' is not one of Shakespeare's ''warm and fuzzy'' comedies. It's dark, uncomfortable, and deeply thought-provoking. It asks difficult questions about justice, mercy, and what happens when the people in power are hypocrites. The setup is brilliant: a strict deputy, Angelo, is left in charge and decides to crack down on vice. He sentences a young man to death for sleeping with his fiancée. When the man's sister, a novice nun, comes to beg for mercy, Angelo offers her a terrible choice: her brother's life for her body. The play then twists and turns, with the Duke disguised as a friar manipulating everyone. It's a tense, gripping drama that feels startlingly modern in its exploration of sexual coercion and institutional hypocrisy. Isabella is a fascinating heroine, and Angelo is one of Shakespeare's most chilling villains. Not a feel-good play, but a powerful and essential one. This Cambridge edition is excellent.
