Book Review:
''Middlemarch'' is often called the greatest novel in the English language, and for good reason. It's a book of immense wisdom, compassion, and psychological depth. It's the story of a whole town, with all its hopes, hypocrisies, and dramas. At its center are two unforgettable characters: Dorothea Brooke, a young woman with a passionate soul trapped in a society that offers her no real outlet, and Tertius Lydgate, an idealistic doctor whose ambitions are crushed by the provincial world. Their stories, and the stories of the dozens of other characters, are woven together into a rich and complex tapestry. George Eliot writes with a profound understanding of human nature. She never judges her characters; she shows us their flaws and their virtues with equal sympathy. The result is a novel that feels both deeply of its time and utterly timeless. It's a long book, but it rewards every minute you spend with it. A true masterpiece.
