This time, Nancy finds herself defending a young baby-sitter who is wrongly accused of burglarizing the homes where she worked. The premise is classic Nancy Drew: an underdog needs help, and Nancy is the only one who believes in her innocence.

Carolyn Keene crafts a clever mystery with a tight plot that involves security systems, jealous boyfriends, and a series of escalating dangers. The story moves at a good pace, and the clues are laid out fairly, allowing young readers to try and solve the mystery alongside Nancy. The inclusion of an angry Doberman and a kidnapping adds just the right amount of tension without being too scary for the target age group.

Nancy is her usual brilliant self, piecing together the clues while putting herself in harm's way to protect the innocent. The supporting characters, especially the accused baby-sitter Juanita, are sympathetic and well-drawn.
