Book Review:
Anthony Horowitz continues his gripping ''The Power of Five'' series with its fourth installment, ''Necropolis,'' and it's an absolute thrill ride from start to finish. If you've been following the journey of Matt Freeman and the other Gatekeepers, this book will not disappoint.
The story introduces us to Scarlett Adams, a fifteen-year-old girl who has become the center of a media storm after her mysterious disappearance—one she refuses to explain. Meanwhile, in Peru, Matt Freeman realizes the truth: Scarlett is the fifth and final Gatekeeper, the last of the Five who must stand together against the dark power of the Old Ones. But evil is always one step ahead, luring Scarlett to Hong Kong and trapping her in a dying city where escape seems impossible.
Horowitz masterfully weaves multiple narrative threads together, maintaining breakneck pace throughout. The Hong Kong setting is brilliantly realized—a city on the brink of collapse becomes a character in itself, with its neon-lit streets and hidden corners providing the perfect backdrop for supernatural terror.
What sets this book apart is how Horowitz balances action with character development. Scarlett is a worthy addition to the Gatekeepers, bringing her own strengths and vulnerabilities. The dynamic between the Five as they finally begin to unite is electric with tension and hope. The villains are genuinely terrifying, and the stakes have never been higher.
The horror elements are well-judged for young adult readers—scary enough to send shivers down your spine but never gratuitous. The supernatural mythology continues to expand in fascinating ways, revealing more about the Old Ones and the ancient prophecy.
''Necropolis'' is a fantastic addition to the series that sets the stage for an epic finale. Fans of supernatural thrillers, horror, and action-packed fantasy will devour this book. Highly recommended for readers aged 12 and above.
