Book Review:
Neil Gaiman's ''Norse Mythology'' is a thrilling, vivid, and utterly enchanting retelling of the ancient stories that have inspired so much of our modern fantasy. With the skill of a master storyteller and the warmth of a fireside bard, Gaiman brings the gods of Asgard to life for a new generation.
The book is a collection of interconnected tales, spanning from the creation of the world to its apocalyptic end at Ragnarok. Gaiman introduces us to the unforgettable pantheon of Norse gods: Odin, the all-father, wise and cunning, forever seeking knowledge at a terrible price; Thor, his mighty son, powerful and heroic, whose hammer Mjollnir is the terror of the giants; and Loki, the trickster, charming and duplicitous, whose schemes set in motion the chain of events that will lead to the downfall of the gods. We also meet the beautiful and fiercely independent Freya, the dark god Balder, and a host of giants, dwarfs, and other mythical beings.
Gaiman's prose is clear, engaging, and perfectly pitched. He captures the humor, the tragedy, and the raw power of these ancient myths. He tells the stories of Thor's lost hammer, the building of Asgard's wall, the mead of poetry, and the death of Balder with a freshness and immediacy that makes them feel new. His version of Ragnarok is particularly powerful, a stark and moving account of the final, inevitable battle.
''Norse Mythology'' is a joy to read. It is a book that will appeal to longtime fans of Gaiman, to readers new to these ancient tales, and to anyone who loves a good story, well told. As the Irish Times noted, Gaiman ''assumes the role of fireside bard, inviting us to sit close on a chilly winter's night and chuckle and wonder along with him.'' A magnificent achievement.
