Michael Crichton was a master of many genres—science fiction, techno-thrillers, medical dramas. But ''Pirate Latitudes,'' published after his death, reveals a side of his talent that readers rarely saw: the historical adventure writer. And it's a delight.

The novel is set in 1665, in the lawless English colony of Port Royal, Jamaica. Port Royal is a pirate's paradise—a town of taverns, brothels, and cutthroats, where fortune favors the bold and death comes quickly. Captain Charles Hunter is one of the bold. When he learns of a Spanish galleon laden with gold, sheltered in the supposedly impregnable harbor of Matanceros, he sees his chance.

Hunter assembles a crew of misfits and scoundrels: a Jewish physician, a master carpenter, a gunnery expert, a pair of vicious killers, and a motley collection of sailors. Their plan is audacious: infiltrate the harbor, seize the ship, and escape with the gold. But nothing goes as planned. The Spanish are waiting. The harbor is more dangerous than they imagined. And the treasure they seek may not be worth the price they'll pay.

What follows is a classic adventure tale, full of action, suspense, and narrow escapes. Crichton's research is impeccable, bringing the world of 17th-century Caribbean to life: the ships, the weapons, the politics, the brutality. The pacing is relentless, with set piece after set piece—sea battles, jungle treks, fortress assaults—each more thrilling than the last.

The San Francisco Chronicle calls it ''Crichton's ultimate adventure.'' The Washington Post praises it as a ''swashbuckling pirate thriller... Some critics have noted that ''Pirate Latitudes'' is not as complex as Crichton's best-known works.
