This book is a blast from start to finish. The ''choose your own adventure'' format is executed perfectly, encouraging re-reading to find all the spooky and often hilarious endings. The birthday party setting is brilliant—a place meant for fun becomes a place of horror. Dr. MacDeath is a memorably creepy villain. Stine's writing is, as always, perfectly pitched for middle-grade readers: funny, fast-paced, and just the right amount of scary. The short chapters and interactive nature make it a perfect choice for reluctant readers.
