Book Review:
Professor V. Vitharana's ''Sri Lankan-Maldivian Cultural Affinities'' is a masterful scholarly work that illuminates the deep connections between two island nations often considered separately. Drawing on decades of research in language, literature, archaeology, and cultural anthropology, Vitharana builds a compelling case for the Sri Lankan origins of Maldivian people and culture.

The book's greatest strength is its multidisciplinary approach. Vitharana does not rely on a single line of evidence but weaves together multiple strands: linguistic analysis of Divehi (the Maldivian language), archaeological remains, historical records, and cultural practices. This comprehensive approach makes his conclusions difficult to dismiss.

The linguistic analysis is particularly impressive. Vitharana builds on the foundational work of Wilhelm Geiger (1919) and H.C.P. Bell (1940), two of the great Orientalists who first explored the relationship between Sinhala and Divehi. He brings their work up to date, incorporating new evidence and addressing questions they left unanswered. Dr. P.B. Sannasgala, Editor-in-Chief of the Sinhala Dictionary, goes so far as to suggest that Vitharana ''merits being admitted to the exalted rank of Orientalist'' himself—high praise indeed.

The endorsements from other leading scholars speak to the book's quality. Bhikkhu Professor Dhammavihari describes Vitharana's study as ''absorbing... both interesting and stimulating,'' noting that he has ''played a model role as to what an academic should be.'' Professor Ananda Kulasuriya of the University of Peradeniya praises the book's ''critical approach and analysis'' and notes that it ''contains a wealth of information lucidly, accurately and authoritatively presented.''

Vitharana's credentials are impeccable. He served in the Universities of Sri Jayewardenepura and Ruhuna until his retirement in 1993 and continues to teach Cultural Anthropology, Sinhala Epigraphy, and Sinhala at several universities. He was conferred the Kala Kirti National Award in 1992 and served as President of the Sri Lanka Kala Mandala (State Arts Council). This book represents the culmination of a lifetime of scholarship.

For students of South Asian culture, this book is essential reading. It fills a gap in the literature by examining the connections between two neighboring cultures that are too often studied in isolation. For linguists, it offers valuable data on the relationship between Sinhala and Divehi. And for anyone interested in the cultural history of the Indian Ocean region, it provides insights that will enrich their understanding.

''Sri Lankan-Maldivian Cultural Affinities'' is a work of careful scholarship and genuine insight. It deserves a place in every serious library of South Asian studies. Highly recommended.
