Book Review:
''Sunlight on a Broken Column'' is a beautiful, haunting, and essential novel. It tells the story of Laila, a young Muslim woman growing up in a wealthy, traditional family in Lucknow in the 1930s and 40s. She is surrounded by the strict rules of purdah and family hierarchy, but the world outside is changing. India is on the verge of independence, and Laila is torn between her loyalty to her family and her own desire for freedom and love. Hosain's prose is elegant and evocative, bringing the world of old Lucknow to life with its rich details and complex social codes. Laila is a wonderful heroine, intelligent and observant, and her struggle to find her own path is deeply moving. The novel also offers a unique perspective on the political turmoil of the time, seen through the eyes of a woman caught between tradition and modernity. A true classic that deserves to be much better known. Highly recommended.
