Symbols of Conflict by Cedric Forster is a tense novel set against the explosive conflict between the Tamil Tigers and government troops in northern Sri Lanka. An Australian man and woman, on unrelated personal quests to Jaffna, meet on the night of their captivity. Under constant threat of violence and death, they develop a passion for each other. The woman survives by subterfuge – her true identity would mean certain death – while the man becomes vulnerable by providing an alibi. The drama unfolds in the fierce yet beautiful jungles of the north. A universal novel with a humanitarian theme, it remains intriguing and tense until the end.
