Book Review:
David Baldacci is a master of the modern thriller, and ''The Collectors'' proves he was at the top of his game when he wrote this sequel to the hit novel The Camel Club. It's a fast-paced, intricately plotted page-turner that will keep you guessing until the very end. If you're looking for a smart, suspenseful escape, this is it.
The book has a clever dual-narrative structure. On one track, we follow Annabelle, a glamorous and highly skilled con artist who is assembling a team for the ultimate heist. Her story is a thrilling cat-and-mouse game, full of twists and double-crosses. On the other track, the members of the Camel Club—Oliver Stone, Reuben, Caleb, and Milton—are drawn into a dark mystery when a friend is found dead under suspicious circumstances in the Library of Congress. Their investigation uncovers a shadowy conspiracy that seems to connect to Annabelle's world in unexpected ways.
Baldacci excels at creating memorable characters, and the Camel Club members are a truly unique and likeable bunch. Watching this group of oddballs take on powerful and ruthless enemies is immensely satisfying. The plot is complex but never confusing, with Baldacci expertly weaving the two storylines together for a climactic and explosive finale. The settings, from the hallowed halls of the Library of Congress to the seedy underbelly of the gambling world, are vividly rendered.
The Independent on Sunday called it ''thrills and spills aplenty,'' and Woman magazine noted that Baldacci is ''back on chilling form.'' That's a perfect summary. ''The Collectors'' is a thoroughly entertaining thriller that delivers on every level. If you're a fan of Baldacci or just love a good conspiracy story, this book is a must-read. Highly recommended.
