Book Review:
Stephen King's ''The Drawing of the Three'' is a masterpiece of dark fantasy, a novel that expands the world of the Dark Tower in thrilling and unexpected ways. After the atmospheric but enigmatic ''The Gunslinger,'' this second volume delivers action, character development, and a deeper understanding of Roland's quest.

The novel picks up where the first left off, with Roland on the beach, recovering from his encounter with the man in black. He discovers three doors along the beach, each leading to a different time in our world. Through these doors, Roland must ''draw'' three companions who will join his quest.

The first door leads to Eddie Dean, a young heroin addict in the 1980s who is a courier for a drug lord. Roland's intervention in Eddie's life is dramatic and dangerous, pulling Eddie into Roland's world just as he's about to be killed. Eddie is a wonderful character—funny, vulnerable, and deeply human—and his journey from addict to gunslinger-in-training is one of the novel's great pleasures.

The second door leads to Odetta Holmes, a wealthy, educated woman living in the 1960s who lost her legs in a mysterious accident. But Odetta has a dark side: a violent, bigoted alter ego named Detta Walker. Roland must find a way to integrate these two personalities if Odetta is to become the third member of his ka-tet.

The third door leads to Jack Mort, a killer whose actions have already affected Odetta's life in terrible ways. Roland's confrontation with Mort is brutal and cathartic, setting the stage for Odetta's transformation into Susannah.

King's prose is at its best here. The pacing is relentless, with each section building tension and deepening character. The interplay between Roland, Eddie, and Odetta/Detta is fascinating, as three very different people learn to trust each other and work together.

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution states: ''Stephen King's storytelling prowess has never been more potent!'' The Baltimore Sun calls King ''a master at creating living, breathing, believable characters.'' Booklist describes it as ''complex and fascinating!'' The Columbus Sunday Dispatch praises it as ''one of King's best... communicates on a genuine, human level... rich in symbolism and allegory.''

''The Drawing of the Three'' is essential reading for fans of the Dark Tower series. It's the book where the quest truly begins, where Roland's ka-tet is formed, and where readers fall in love with these characters. Highly recommended for anyone who loves epic fantasy, dark adventure, and masterful storytelling.
