Book Review:
''The Giraffe and the Pelly and Me'' is a delightful, sun-drenched story from Roald Dahl that feels like a warm hug. It's a shorter, gentler tale compared to some of his darker works, but it's filled with the same whimsy, wit, and wonderful wordplay.
The story follows Billy, a boy with a dream of owning a sweet shop. His dream takes an unexpected turn when he discovers a magnificent old house occupied by three remarkable friends: a giraffe, a pelican, and a monkey. They've started the Ladderless Window-Cleaning Company, and Billy is immediately hired as their business manager. The concept is pure Dahl genius: the giraffe's neck stretches to any height, the pelican's beak is a perfect water bucket, and the monkey's quickness handles the squeegees.
The trio's adventure leads them to the home of the Duke of Hampshire, the richest man in England. What follows is a charming sequence of events involving cleaning 677 windows, foiling a jewel thief, and, of course, making Billy's sweet shop dream come true. The story is filled with Dahl's characteristic linguistic playfulness—''scrumptious galumptious'' being a prime example.
Quentin Blake's illustrations are, as always, the perfect partner, bringing the gentle giraffe, the proud pelican, and the cheeky monkey to life with his energetic lines. The book celebrates friendship, enterprise, and the idea that even the wildest dreams can come true with a little help from friends. It's a wonderfully positive and uplifting story that leaves you with a smile.
This book is perfect for younger readers (ages 5-8) as an introduction to Dahl's work, and it's a lovely, quick read for older fans. It's a testament to Dahl's belief in kindness, imagination, and the joy of making friends in the most unexpected places. Highly recommended.
