Book Review:
A Monumental and Provocative Reimagining of Hindu History
Wendy Doniger's ''The Hindus: An Alternative History'' is a book of immense ambition and extraordinary achievement. It is a sweeping, erudite, and often dazzling account of a civilization that spans more than three millennia. But it is also a deeply provocative book, one that challenges cherished assumptions and offers a radically different perspective on the history of Hinduism.
Doniger, one of the world's foremost scholars of Hinduism, sets out to write an ''alternative'' history, one that focuses not on the usual male, Brahminical elites, but on the voices and experiences of those who have been marginalized: women, lower castes, merchants, and even animals. She draws on an astonishing range of sources, from ancient cave paintings and Sanskrit epics to medieval folktales and modern cinema.
The result is a history that is rich, complex, and often surprising. Doniger shows us a Hinduism that is not monolithic but endlessly diverse, a tradition that has always been shaped by debate, dissent, and the creative appropriation of new ideas. She explores the role of animals in Hindu mythology, the eroticism of temple sculpture, the subversive humor of folk tales, and the ways in which women have both been constrained by and found agency within the tradition.
The book has been met with both widespread acclaim and fierce controversy. Amartya Sen, the Nobel Prize-winning economist, called it ''a work of remarkable scholarship, and a major contribution to the understanding of the capacious nature of the Hindu tradition.'' Bibek Debroy praised it as ''an amazingly breathtaking book in its sweep.'' But it has also been criticized by some for its interpretations and its focus.
Whatever one's perspective, there is no denying the importance of this book. It is a monumental achievement that will be read and debated for generations. It is a must-read for anyone seriously interested in Hinduism, Indian history, or the study of religion. As Sudhir Kakar notes, ''there is no one better than Wendy Doniger to convey the richness, depth and diversity of Hindu texts and traditions to international audiences.'' Highly recommended.
