David Baldacci's Will Robie series is a masterclass in modern espionage thriller, and ''The Hit'' is a white-knuckle ride that proves this government assassin is one of the most compelling characters in the genre. If you're looking for a book that moves at breakneck speed, with twists that will leave you breathless, this is it.

The premise is a thriller writer's dream. Will Robie, the government's most reliable hitman, is given his most disturbing assignment yet: eliminate Jessica Reel, a fellow assassin who has apparently gone rogue, killing her handler and disappearing. The hunt is on. But as Robie tracks Reel across continents, he begins to realize that nothing is as it seems. The evidence is too perfect, the trail too convenient. Is he hunting a traitor, or is he being set up?

Baldacci is a master of pacing. The action sequences are superbly choreographed, but the real tension comes from the cat-and-mouse game between two highly skilled professionals who know each other's methods. The book shifts locations with dizzying speed, from the corridors of power in Washington to the gritty streets of Dublin, keeping you constantly off-balance.

What elevates ''The Hit'' beyond a simple action flick is its moral complexity. Robie is an assassin, but he's not a monster. He operates by a code, and this mission forces him to question everything he believes in. The relationship between Robie and Reel is fascinating, full of suspicion, respect, and a shared, unspoken understanding of the world they inhabit.

The Times called it ''the page-turner of the season,'' and the Daily Mail praised its ''brilliant plotting, heart-grabbing action and characters to die for.'' That's a perfect summary.
