Book Review:
''The International Co-operative Alliance During War and Peace 1910-1950'' by Rita Rhodes is a meticulously researched and compelling historical account of one of the world's oldest and most resilient international organisations. This book, based extensively on ICA archive materials, chronicles the Alliance's journey through the tumultuous period of two World Wars and the Cold War.

The ICA, established in 1895, has been distinguished by its longevity—a feature that sets it apart from other international working class organisations. Rhodes explores how the ICA navigated the greatest threats to its existence, from the devastation of war to the ideological challenges of communism, fascism, and Nazism. She identifies two overarching reasons for the ICA's survival: its robust organisation (constitution, governance structures, and accountability) and its consistent ideology (adherence to co-operative principles, political neutrality, and an active pro-peace policy).

As the author notes, the location of its Secretariat in a country that was not invaded, which also happened to be home to its largest voluntary co-operative movement (the UK), was another contributing factor. The book concludes that the Alliance's survival later enabled it to play an important part in third world co-operative development.

This is an essential read for anyone interested in the history of cooperatives, international organisations, or the social movements of the 20th century. Highly recommended for its depth, scholarship, and insight.
