Book Review:
Ben Miller is best known as an actor and comedian, but with ''The Night I Met Father Christmas,'' he proves he's also a natural storyteller for children. This enchanting Christmas tale has all the markings of a future holiday classic—warmth, humor, magic, and a heart that beats on every page.
The story begins with Jackson, a boy who knows everything there is to know about Father Christmas. He knows about the reindeer, the elves, the North Pole workshop, the magic that allows one man to deliver presents to every child in the world in a single night. But there's one thing he doesn't know: how did Father Christmas become Father Christmas?
On Christmas Eve, Jackson gets the answer directly from the source. Father Christmas himself appears and tells Jackson his story—a tale that takes them both on an adventure into a magical snowy landscape, where a mean-spirited elf named Torvil is about to discover the true meaning of Christmas.
Miller's writing is warm and accessible, perfect for reading aloud on a cold winter's night. The story moves at a good pace, with enough twists and turns to keep young readers engaged without becoming complicated. The humor is gentle and warm—just right for the intended audience.
What makes the book special is its heart. Miller understands that the best Christmas stories are about more than just presents and magic; they're about kindness, generosity, and the importance of thinking of others. Torvil the elf's journey from selfishness to understanding is handled with sensitivity and charm.
Daniela Jaglenka Terrazzini's illustrations are absolutely gorgeous—detailed, atmospheric, and filled with warmth. They capture the magic of Christmas perfectly, from the sparkle of snow to the cozy glow of firelight. The book is worth buying for the illustrations alone.
The praise from other authors and celebrities is well-deserved. Ruth Jones calls it ''a sheer delight for all kids both big AND small.'' Philip Ardagh describes it as ''enchanting and funny.'' Abi Elphinstone says it's ''a fire-side gem of a story.'' Alexander Armstrong praises how it ''bubbles with warmth and mischievous humour... irresistible.''
''The Night I Met Father Christmas'' is destined to become a Christmas tradition for many families. It's the kind of book that will be pulled out year after year, read by firelight, and remembered fondly into adulthood. If you're looking for a new Christmas classic to share with the children in your life, this is it.
Highly recommended for ages 4-8, and for anyone who still believes in the magic of Christmas.
