Book Review:
''The Old Curiosity Shop'' is a book that divides opinion, but you cannot deny its power. At its heart is Little Nell, one of Dickens' most famous (and famously innocent) heroines. Her story, alongside her beloved grandfather, fleeing the terrifying dwarf Daniel Quilp, is a gripping and often heartbreaking journey through the Victorian English countryside. And what a villain Quilp is! He's one of Dickens' most grotesque and menacing creations, a truly unforgettable monster of cruelty and gleeful malice. The book is pure Victorian melodrama—it will make you weep, cheer, and hold your breath. Some modern readers find Nell's goodness a bit too much, but if you surrender to Dickens' world, it's an incredibly moving experience. This Wordsworth edition includes the original illustrations by Phiz and helpful notes. A classic that shows Dickens at his most sentimental and most powerful.
