Book Review:
The Pickwick Papers (1836-37) was Charles Dickens’ first novel and an instant sensation that created “Pickwick mania” across England. It follows the kindly, naive Samuel Pickwick and his three companions — Tupman, Snodgrass, and Winkle — as they travel through the English countryside, reporting their “scientific” observations to the Pickwick Club. What ensues is a series of comic misadventures: mistaken identities, romantic entanglements, law cases, duels, and hilarious encounters with the conman Jingle. Later, the brilliant cockney servant Sam Weller appears, whose witty remarks and loyal service steal the show. Unlike Dickens’ darker later works, Pickwick is pure, joyous comedy — warm-hearted, absurd, and endlessly entertaining. A perfect introduction to Dickens for new readers.
