Book Review:
''The Professor'' is a fascinating book for any fan of Charlotte Brontë. It's her first novel, written before ''Jane Eyre,'' and you can see her experimenting with the themes and settings that would later become her trademark. What's most striking is the narrator: a man, William Crimsworth. It's a bold choice for a female writer of the time. The story follows William as he leaves England to become a teacher in Brussels, where he gets caught between the passionate, manipulative school directress and the quiet, intelligent pupil-teacher he comes to love. The Brussels setting will be familiar to readers of ''Villette.'' The novel has a raw, unpolished quality compared to her later work. It's not as emotionally gripping as ''Jane Eyre,'' but it's still a compelling read, with sharp observations about power, class, and gender. A must-read for Brontë completists and anyone interested in the development of a great writer.
