Book Review:
David Baldacci is a master of the legal thriller, and ''The Simple Truth'' is a prime example of why he's a perennial bestseller. This is a classic Baldacci formula: an ordinary man caught up in an extraordinary conspiracy, a race against time, and a fight for justice against seemingly impossible odds. It's fast-paced, intricately plotted, and thoroughly entertaining.
The novel weaves together two compelling storylines. One follows Rufus Harms, a man who has spent 25 years in prison for a murder he may not have committed. When a long-buried secret about his case is accidentally revealed, he becomes a target and must escape to save his life. The other follows John Fiske, a former cop turned successful attorney whose younger brother is a Supreme Court clerk who stumbles onto the same conspiracy and pays the ultimate price. Fiske is drawn into the investigation, determined to find the truth and avenge his brother.
Baldacci expertly connects these two narratives, building suspense with each chapter. The villains are suitably ruthless, the stakes are sky-high, and the action sequences are gripping. The novel also offers a sharp, if cynical, look at the corridors of power in Washington, D.C., where secrets are kept and lives are destroyed to protect the powerful.
The Sunday Times praised Baldacci's ''formidably accomplished'' plotting, and the Daily Mail lauded the ''brilliant plotting, heart-grabbing action and characters to die for.'' That sums it up perfectly. ''The Simple Truth'' is a solid, satisfying thriller that will keep you turning the pages late into the night. If you're a fan of Baldacci or just love a good conspiracy story, this one is highly recommended.
